Regulation

  • What you can buy

    • One-way tickets;
    • Leonardo Express tickets (tar. N. 1/Ter " A class");
    • Weekly, fortnightly (only Friuli-Venezia-Giulia) and monthly Travel-/Discount Cards for 1st and 2nd class but for these trains only: Suburban (S - only for the Lombardy region), Regional, Direct (D) and Inter-regional (IR).
      Single ticket for journeys departing from one region with destinations in another one, valid only on the regional trains.
    • Monthly Travelcard for travelling from one region to another, valid only on the regional trains.
    Please note for the journeys having their departure/arrival stations in 2 or more regions, weekly Travelcards are not issued

    Prices 
    • For journeys within a region, including the fare extensions as laid down in Annex No. 13 of the Conditions and Fares, the prices of the regional fares of single and Travelcards are applied (fares 39 and 40)
    • For journeys that cross 2 or more regions, the regional fares apply

    For all things not expressly indicated, the regulations and conditions apply for the single journeys (fares 39) and for the Travelcard (fares 40).

    Format and characteristics of the new ticket :
    • One-way tickets

    At the end of the purchasing procedure, customers are sent a file in PDF format. This file is the receipt that amounts to the actual tickets itself. It bears the name and surname, the specifications of the journey and tariff, the validity, a bar code and a unique string of alphanumerical characters of four series of three figures.

    ATTENTION: The ticket/payment receipt is nominative, personal and non-transferrable. It will not be possible to buy tickets for other individuals.

    • Travel-/discount cards
    At the end of the purchasing procedure, customers are sent a file in PDF format.
    It contains the name, surname and date of birth, the specifications of the journey and tariff, the validity, a bar code and a recognition code.

    ATTENTION: Travel-/Discount Cards are nominative, personal and non-transferrable. It will not be possible to buy Travel-/Discount Cards for other individuals.

    The tickets issued by the purchase online are already validated.

  • How to purchase

    Prerequisites

    • access to a computer connected to the internet
    • printer (black and white is enough);
    • e-mail account;
    • credit card or pre-paid card.

    Registration and Purchasing
    Customers connect to the website of Trenitalia. In the " Customers Area", they register with the website. Registration is free, done once only and is valid for all subsequent purchases.
    The compulsory information for website registration is: Surname, Name and e-mail address

    Trenitalia will first send a confirmation e-mail of registration which allows you to buy on-line a one-way ticket or a Travel-/Discount Card.
    At the end of the purchasing operation, Trenitalia will send an e-mail with PDF file attachment as receipt of the ticket/Travel-/Discount Card;

    Information required to purchase
    Single ticket, Leonardo Express ticket and tickets for journeys with regional trains having departure and destination stations in different regions.  In their applications, customers must state: 
    • journey route (departure and destination stations);
    • departure date;
    • class and tariff (e.g..: 1st or 2nd class);
    • the train that determines the departure time (identifying the commencement of ticket validity);

    The receipt to print will also bear the name of the person to whom the ticket is made out.

    Travelcards/disc. tickets
    In their applications, customers must state:
    • route (departure and destination stations);
    • type of Travel-/Discount Card (monthly, fortnightly or weekly);
    • validity-start date;
    • validity period (calendar month, first or second half of the month - for fortnightly Cards - or week number);
      class;
    Please note that for the journeys with regional trains with departure and destination stations in different regions weekly Travelcards are not issued.

    The receipt to print will indicate the name and date of birth of the Travel-/Discount Card holder.

    Printing the ticket
    The receipt must be printed and kept. If it is not possible to print out the receipt, the system will let you print it on a later date (from the website in the "Customers Area" section). You must however do this before the train's departure - so you always board the train with the ticket/receipt.
    The printed receipt, which is your ticket, bears the traveller's name, the price paid and the validity; it must be shown, together with a valid document of recognition, on every request by the on-board personnel.
    Once printed, you can cut the Travel-/Discount Card along the dashed/dotted line. 

  • Validity and terms of use

    Single ticket Leonardo Express ticket and ticket for journeys departing from one region with destinations in another one made with regional trains.  
    Tickets (printed receipts) are valid for only one journey, on the section requested, on the Suburban, Regional, Direct and Inter-regional trains, provided this is allowed for from among the journey solutions offered by Italian state railways and provided the official departure time (as per Timetable) is within 4 hours from the departure of the train selected when buying (e.g.: a traveller who chooses a journey from Pavia to Milan on train R20266 departing from Pavia at 12.51 can leave from 12.51 until 15.51 on the same day).

    For regional tickets purchased on-line:

    • It is NOT possible to bring forward the departure date.
    • It is not allowed to change tickets or their classes


    Ticket refunds are allowed solely in the following cases and according to the formalities given below:
    • in case of strike
    • in case of wrong purchase

    Tickets (printed receipts) are not valid in conjunction with ICPasses. Unless otherwise expressly provided, the standards applied are those under Art 22 of the Conditions and Fares and those of the individual regional fares.

    Travel/discount cards
    • Weekly - validity and procedures of use provided for by the individual regional fares
    • Fortnightly - regards weekly Travel-/Discount Cards issued by Friuli-Venezia-Giulia the validity of which are as follows: Travel-/Discount Cards are valid for a full half calendar month from the 1st to the 15th inclusive for those validated in the first 15 days and from the 16th to month-end for the ones stamped in that period
    • Monthly - the validity, for all the Travelcards, is by calendar month; for those issued for journeys departing from one region with destinations in another, issuance is for a distance of up to 250 km.
    Remember that, for journeys with departure and destination stations in different regions weekly Travelcards are not issued
    Travel-/Discount Cards are not valid in conjunction with ICPasses or admission cards of any type.

    It is not allowed to change class for either the whole Travel-/Discount Card or individual journeys.
    Travel-/Discount Cards are non-refundable and non-replaceable.

  • How they are checked

    One-way tickets
    The on-board personnel is instructed to check ticket validity (printed receipts) by:

    • Directly looking at it
    • Checking the details printed on the receipt with the document of recognition exhibited at the same time as receipt of payment
    • Checking the payment receipt by ticket code and bar code

    Payment receipt/ticket is already validated so need not be punched by the traveller.

    Travellers unable to show a printed receipt or a valid identification document are considered as not having any ticket and will be fined as per Art. 9 of C.T. or as per the individual provisions of the regional rules.
    In cases of journeys made or attempted to be made with tickets or documents that have been transferred, counterfeited, altered or re-used, the traveller will be liable to pay the full price for the full ticket route, plus a fine of three times that amount, with the minimum of 50 euro.
    Tickets or documents that have been transferred, counterfeited, altered, as well as any unlawfully in travellers' possession, will be confiscated.
    For the other irregularities, the provisions are applied as per Art. 9 of the "C.T."

    Travel/discount cards
    The on-board personnel are required to check the validity of a Travel-/Discount Card by: 

    • Directly looking at it. 
    • Checking the details printed on the receipt with the document of recognition exhibited at the same time as receipt of payment
    • Checking the payment receipt by ticket code and bar code

    The payment receipt/Travel-/Discount Card is already validated so need not be stamped by the traveller

    Travellers unable to show their print confirmation of purchase of their Travel-/Discount Card, or unable to show a valid identification document are considered as without a ticket and fined according to Art. 9 of the "C.T."s or to the provisions applicable to individual regional fares.
    In cases of journeys made or attempted to be made with Travel-/Discount Cards or documents that have been transferred, counterfeited, altered or reused, the traveller will be liable to pay the full price for the full ticket route, plus a fine of three times that amount, with the minimum of 50 euro.
    The Travel-/Discount Cards or documents transferred, counterfeited or altered, and those unlawfully held by the travellers, will be confiscated.

    For the other irregularities, the provisions are applied as per Art. 9 of the "C.T."

    Irregularities
    Travellers with tickets/Travel-/Discount Cards bought on-line and found travelling on the trains of the National/International Passengers Division are considered as being without tickets and, as such, fined according to the current regulations.
