Agreement on Journey Continuation
Trenitalia adheres to the Agreement on Journey Continuation (AJC), which has been signed by the main European rail operators. The agreement allows passengers on an international journey that involves a number of successive train connections on services operated by AJC signatories, and who have missed a connecting train due to the delay or cancellation of the previous train, to board the next available train of the rail company operating the service specified on the unused ticket, in the same purchased class, at no additional cost.
The operators that have agreed to the AJC are: BLS (Switzerland), CD (Czech Republic), CFL (Luxembourg), DB (Germany), DSB (Denmark), HŽPP (Croatia), LTG Link (Lithuania), MÁV-START (Hungary), NS (The Netherlands), ÖBB (Austria), PKP IC (Poland), Renfe (Spain), Snälltåget (Sweden), SJ (Sweden), SBB/CFF/FFS (Switzerland), SNCB/NMBS (Belgium), SNCF (France), SZ (Slovenia), Trenitalia (Italy), GYSEV (Hungary), ZSSK (Slovakia), Eurostar International Limited (United Kingdom, France, Belgium and the Netherlands), THI Factory (France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands).
If you miss your connection on an international journey due to the delay or cancellation of the previous train from one of the rail operators who have signed the agreement, you should contact the on-board staff to obtain a certificate of delay and, at staffed stations, the customer service staff in order to book the continuation of your journey on the next available train (subject to confirmation of seat availability) operated by the rail company that issued the originally purchased ticket.
Main conditions
- The AJC may apply only if the booked journey allows for sufficient time to transfer to the connecting train and in any case, for Trenitalia services, only if the missed connection is caused by a delay of the previous train exceeding 15 minutes.
- Continuation of the journey must take place with Trenitalia (the carrier of the original ticket and only for the same route). Passengers must have their original ticket and the certificate of delay or cancellation of the previous train.
- Continuation is subject to seat availability in the same purchased class (for trains with mandatory reservation only).
For example
You are travelling from Munich to Milan, having purchased the following tickets:
- a Eurocity ticket from Munich to Verona (operated by Deutsche Bahn);
- a Frecciarossa ticket from Verona to Milan (operated by Trenitalia).
If you miss the connection to Milan due to a delay in the train to Verona, you may ask the Deutsche Bahn railway staff to obtain a certificate of delay and contact Trenitalia personnel present at the station, so you can continue your journey on the next available Frecciarossa train service to Milan.
For Trenitalia Regional trains services
- Passengers holding a Regional Digital Ticket (BDR) can independently change their travel time (the change must be made before the scheduled departure of the train selected during purchase), without a certificate of delay. If passengers miss the last available connection, they may travel the following day on a Trenitalia Regional train service, on the same route, by showing the BDR screen to on-board staff together with proof of the delay issued by the previous carrier.
- Passengers holding a paper regional ticket may use it until midnight on the ticket’s validity date, provided it has been validated. Should the last available connection be missed, they may travel the next day on a Trenitalia Regional train service, on the same route, by showing the validated paper ticket to on-board staff together with proof of the delay issued by the previous carrier.
For IC/ICN Trenitalia services
For night services, upon presentation of a valid delay confirmation, passengers are entitled to accommodation equivalent to their original ticket: those with a reserved seat will be reallocated a seat or, upon payment of a supplement, they may be accommodated in a couchette or sleeping car.
Further information
The Agreement on Journey Continuation is a voluntarily adopted agreement between railway companies, in the form of a commercial gesture, and does not affect passengers’ rights regarding assistance, refunds/rerouting or compensation for delays as provided for in each transport contract, in accordance with the applicable legislation. Transport services continue to be governed by the respective contracts and the terms and conditions of carriage of the individual carriers.
