Buy a Regional train ticket with the TAP&TAP system

Use your contactless Visa, Mastercard or American Express1 card directly at the validation machines marked with the TAP&TAP symbol.

How it works

  1. TAP IN
    Hold your payment card up to the validation machine before boarding and wait for confirmation2

  2. TRAVEL
    Hop on the train and head to your destination

  3. TAP OUT
    On arrival, re-tap the same card against the validation machine to end your journey

1. For American Express, you can earn the "best fare" exclusively by registering and using physical contactless cards.
2. If you need to change trains to reach your destination, you do not need to tap in at the station where you change trains.

IMPORTANT – TAP OUT is required to correctly complete your journey.

If this is not done at the station of arrival:

  • The journey has not been completed correctly
  • You will be charged the maximum fare applicable to the region you are travelling in, rather than the fare for the journey actually made

What you can do with the TAP&TAP system
With the TAP&TAP system, you can buy:

  • Standard-fare 2nd class single adult tickets
  • one ticket per card and per passenger

The following is not permitted:

  • buying multiple tickets with the same card
  • taking advantage of reduced or discounted rates (e.g. concessions for children)

You do not need to TAP OUT on the Leonardo Express to and from Roma Termini and Fiumicino Airport.

The service is active on the following lines. You can use TAP&TAP on the routes listed above and at intermediate stations. You can also use TAP&TAP to travel on the Leonardo express from Roma Termini to Fiumicino Airport and vice versa (in this case it will not be necessary to use the TAP when getting off). During the onboard check, simply provide the last 4 digits of the payment card used. The same card must be used on departure and arrival. E.g.: If you tapped first with a physical card, the second tap should also be performed with the same physical card.

You will automatically get the best rate by registering your card.

  • Once the cap has been reached, subsequent journeys on the same route will no longer be charged
  • The calculation is automatic, based on the range of fares applicable to standard season tickets (excluding combined tickets) available for travel on the route in question (e.g. weekly, fortnightly, monthly, quarterly, half-yearly or annually)

You must always TAP IN and TAP OUT even with the “best fare”.
