Trenitalia Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato

Improving performance

In 2025, Trenitalia continued the journey begun in 2021 by undergoing a third evaluation from EcoVadis, a globally recognized rating agency that assesses corporate ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) performance. The evaluation covered four topics: environment, human rights and labor practices, ethics, and sustainable procurement.

With an overall score of 79 out of 100, Trenitalia once again ranked among the top 5% of companies awarded with the Gold Medal. The company improved in all four assessment areas, increasing its score by 20 points compared to its initial EcoVadis evaluation.

Within the rail transport sector, Trenitalia is positioned among the top 1% of companies assessed worldwide and among the top 4% across all industries.

This recognition reaffirms Trenitalia’s ongoing commitment to sustainability.

Being aware of the central role played by the mobility sector for responsible growth, Trenitalia intends to take an active part in helping to improve quality of life and the areas it passes through.

To do this, it is committed to developing a corporate culture oriented towards respecting the principles of sustainable development that affects all levels of the organisation and the management of processes in a responsible manner, in line with the UN 2030 Agenda.

With this in mind, on June 5, 2024, on the occasion of World Environment Day, Trenitalia drafted the Sustainability Manifesto. This commitment to the country and the planet focuses on the awareness of all its people and can be summarised in ten key words that accompany change: attention, courage, closeness, integration, balance, connection, measure, care, regeneration, non-discrimination.

With the purpose of spreading the principles enshrined in the Manifesto, the Sustainability Grand Tour began on 5 June 2024, allowing us to reach colleagues and customers aboard our trains.

During this awareness-raising journey, the Sustainability Manifesto came to life and changed shape thanks to the contribution of internal stakeholders and, one year after the beginning of this journey, Trenitalia updated the Manifesto by adding a new word to each binary. In this way, the company's commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals has taken on a new and even more concrete form.

The new words in the Sustainability Manifesto, which have been added to the previous ones without modifying them, but rather strengthening them, are: prevention, determination, cohesion, community, commitment, synergy, awareness, accessibility, footprint, reciprocity.

Sustainability Manifesto

Inspired by the principles of the Sustainability ManifestoTrenitalia drafted its first Sustainability Document, a fundamental step towards transparency and sharing its commitment to sustainable development. This first edition recounts the results obtained in the past year, which are the outcome of a well-rooted path that embraces environmental and social responsibility in all its nuances.

The Document provides an in-depth exploration of the multiple areas in which Trenitalia operates to integrate ESG principles along the entire value chain. This starts with solid and transparent governance, passes through attention to its stakeholders and continues on to the strategic approach to operational security and technological innovation.

Great significance is given to people, the true protagonists of sustainable mobility: from employees to customers and suppliers, which are selected according to sustainability criteria.

The document aims to make Trenitalia known not only as a transport company, but above all as a key player that promotes integrated and sustainable mobility, one capable of combining innovation, efficiency and responsibility towards the environment and society.
