Trenitalia Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato
Assistance to passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility
The assistance service at train stations is provided by the Italian Railway Manager (RFI - Rete Ferroviaria Italiana) to “persons with disability” and “persons with reduced mobility” (PRM). The following passengers fall under these definitions:
- wheelchair users;
- people with limb impairments or difficulty in walking;
- elderly people;
- pregnant women;
- people with visual impairments;
- people with hearing impairments and/or difficulty in communicating;
- people with mental and/or intellectual disabilities.
If the traveller for whom the assistance services are requested is not self-sufficient, the services may be conditional on the presence of a personal assistant at the station or a companion during the journey.

The personal data provided by travellers shall be processed by Trenitalia in order to manage assistance on board the trains, in accordance with the purposes and methods set out in the personal data protection policy.
Travellers in wheelchairs, as previously described in the procedures for requesting assistance, are guaranteed accommodation in spaces with the appropriate amenities, subject to availability, by contacting RFI’s Sala Blu Offices or calling the RFI or Trenitalia Call Centres.
The wheelchairs used by passengers with disability must be no more than 700 mm in width, 1,200 mm in depth and 250 kg in weight (including the passenger and any other loads).
Platform lifts operated by specially appointed RFI personnel are used to provide access to the carriages.
The space provided for the accommodation of travellers in wheelchairs consists of a travel zone with a large window and various amenities (table, handrail, call button, etc.) and is located close to adequate toilet facilities.
Spaces for PRM can be occupied only with non-folding wheelchairs. Folding wheelchairs can be stowed in the luggage compartment and the passenger accommodated in a standard seat.
- Frecciarossa, Frecciargento and Frecciabianca trains have two spaces equipped for persons with disability travelling in a wheelchair and two spaces for their travelling companions, in carriage 3 (accessible toilet) or carriage 6 on the ETR 470 fleet (accessible toilet).
- FrecciaLink buses have one space equipped for persons with disability travelling in a wheelchair and one space for their travelling companions. The service can be booked with at least 24 hours’ notice prior to departure.

- Vivalto, Jazz, Swing, Minuetto, Flirt Stadler, Caf, Taf and Media Distanza trains in the regional fleet are equipped for travel by persons with reduced mobility.
The trains have accessible toilets, wheelchair restraints, reserved seats for persons with reduced mobility, a platform and low floors for access to the train.
Some Taf, Media Distanza and Caf trains do not currently have a platform, low floors and accessible toilets. For this reason, remember to check Trenitalia’s official timetable for information on the accessibility of train services for persons with reduced mobility. - Eurocity Italy-Switzerland trains have two spaces for persons with disability travelling in a wheelchair and two spaces for their travelling companions on ETR610 models, in carriage 3; or four spaces for persons with disability travelling in a wheelchair and four spaces for their travelling companions on GIRUNO models (two spaces in carriage 8 and two spaces in carriage 6).
The European Disability Card is a document which comes in the form of a card or in digital version (available in the "Wallet" section of the IO App), which serves as proof of disability status.
If your Disability Card has the letter “A” on the front, indicating that the bearer needs an assistant or a greater degree of support, you can have a travelling companion travel with you for free on certain classes/service levels.
Tickets issued in connection with Disability Cards can be purchased through the main sales channels.
Postoblu is the Trenitalia service which allows you to book tickets at the same time as requesting assistance from the RFI Sala Blu Offices or through the RFI or Trenitalia Call Centres, as previously described, paying later at one of the authorised points.
