Trenitalia is the first European railway company to report the CO₂ emissions of its journeys through the UIC's official “Ecopassenger” calculator.

Thanks to this feature, at the time of buying a ticket each passenger can compare the CO₂ emissions of a train journey with the same journey made by other means, so they can find out which of the various ways of travelling has the lowest environmental impact.

The integration with Ecopassenger will also benefit businesses. The data acquired when purchasing business trips will be stored and used to provide companies with information on the CO₂ emissions emitted while travelling by train, which is useful for sustainability reporting processes.

The parameters provided by the model are consumption/emissions of:

• energy (direct consumption caused by the vehicle and by the production and distribution processes for the energy consumed)
• carbon dioxide (CO₂)
• particulate matter
• nitrogen oxides
• non-methane hydrocarbons

These parameters are calculated for each individual passenger.

By integrating Ecopassenger, Trenitalia confirms its commitment to an increasingly sustainable future in line with people's needs.
