Trenitalia is the first European railway company to report the CO₂ emissions of its journeys through the UIC's official “Ecopassenger” calculator.

Thanks to this feature, when purchasing a ticket, passengers can compare the CO₂ emissions of a train journey with the same journey made by other means, so they can find out which of the various ways of travelling has the lowest environmental impact.

The parameters provided by the model include consumption/emissions of:

• energy (direct consumption by the vehicle and by the production and distribution processes for the energy consumed)
• carbon dioxide (CO₂)
• particulate matter
• nitrogen oxides
• non-methane hydrocarbons

These parameters are calculated for each individual passenger.
