INTERCITY Kids: an inclusive educational area that promotes cultural growth and environmental awareness
INTERCITY Kids is an educational space designed for families travelling with children aged 3 to 12. It encourages positive, eco-friendly habits through play, helping young passengers discover Italy’s rich natural, cultural, and artistic heritage.
Designed to be truly inclusive, this area offers games and activities suitable for children of different ages and abilities, including children who use wheelchair. The texts feature various reading levels to ensure they are easily understood by all school-age children. In addition, the typeface was specifically chosen to facilitate reading, especially for children with dyslexia.
Created by the ecodesign studio IlVespaio, the INTERCITY Kids space features a driver's control console mimicking a real train operator's desk, an interactive game focused on recycling and waste sorting, and a milled wall track depicting Italy’s cultural heritage and biodiversity, along with a toy locomotive and carriages to slide along the route.
The area is available on the new Intercity 200 trains.

When printing traditional paper tickets, Trenitalia uses paper certified according to the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC), a respected international non-governmental organisation, which ensures the use of paper produced with cellulose coming exclusively from responsibly managed forests, or from post-consumer recycling.
Cleaning on board
When carrying out cleaning and disinfection across its fleet, Trenitalia pays special attention to maintaining high hygiene standards by adopting cutting-edge operational methods focused on efficient resource management.
The cleaning companies employed hold ISO 14001 environmental certification. Furthermore, most of the products used carry the EU Ecolabel environmental mark and are supplied in concentrated form for dilution at the point of use, significantly reducing packaging required for transport and storage.
Catering
When drawing up the catering service, a high priority was given to sustainability and to finding solutions that embraced the principles of the circular economy.
The criteria for choosing the materials and packaging used as part of the catering service focused on recyclability and the presence of recycled raw materials.
Examples of this include bottles made from 100% recycled plastic (RPET), which are perfectly recyclable, the foodboxes made of 100% recycled paper with the FSC label and the agreements made to avoid food waste.
We are working to do our part, with the awareness that the road to sustainability is long and requires constant commitment.
WHAT IS R-PET?

We are working to make onboard waste sorting easier and more intuitive to optimize correct disposal. After use, help us ensure this plastic is transformed into a new recycled and recyclable bottle, supporting the bottle-to-bottle cycle.
On board we are working to improve separate waste collection with a view to including visually impaired people.
The Intercity fleet now features new Braille pictograms for waste sorting, available in the snack areas.
Agreements with NGOs to reduce food waste
With the aim of reducing food waste, excess food that is still suitable for consumption is not thrown away but rather donated to associations that distribute it to the most needy people.
