Trenitalia Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato

Sustainability in maintenance plants

For some time now, Trenitalia has also been committed to improving its environmental sustainability in its train maintenance process within its industrial sites, located throughout the country.

To reduce the environmental impact of these works, Trenitalia is developing numerous projects aimed at producing energy from renewable sources, but also at rationalising consumption and increasing energy efficiency.

In 2023, the photovoltaic systems currently active in 12 Trenitalia plants produced a quantity of green energy equal to that consumed annually by about 3,200 Italian families, thus avoiding the annual emission of about 2,330 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.

But it doesn't stop there: to continue on the path towards decarbonisation, Trenitalia plans to further increase the number of plants equipped with photovoltaic systems throughout the country to 32 in 2033

To reduce its electricity and thermal energy consumption, Trenitalia is also committed to continuously improving the energy efficiency of its maintenance plants, thanks to specific interventions mainly targeting the lighting, heating and compressed air systems.
An extensive campaign of in-depth and targeted Energy Diagnostics started in 2015 (more than 70 diagnoses carried out so far by a pool of experts) has allowed Trenitalia to identify the most suitable technical solutions to make its plants more energy efficient and sustainable.

Since 2015, 100% of the electricity purchased by Trenitalia and used in the plants has been certified as energy produced by renewable sources.

Trenitalia has recently started testing projects for recovering wastewater in 5 plants. With a view to saving water resources and therefore the water circular economy, the wastewater at these sites is subjected to special treatments (e.g. reverse osmosis or chlorination) and returned to the plant to be reused for industrial purposes.
