The Italian term elettrotreno (ETR) indicates that the traction power is distributed along the train's length. Uniform traction and a lowered axle weight for each carriage are essential for variable-tilt trains.

The "pendolini" trains tilt on a longitudinal axis of up to ± 8°. This gives a speed increase of up to 20% on bends with respect to traditional trains, thus making these trains ideal for winding routes.

The ETR 460, 480 and 500 trains have a carriage with special seats for two wheelchair passengers plus two accompanying persons.
The carriage space reserved for wheelchair users has adapted bathroom facilities suitable and a journey area with broad window and various accessories (small table, hand rail, staff call button, etc.).
