Trains, especially the Regional-, Direct-, and Inter-Regional services, are used mainly by commuters for work and study. By wanting to cater also to leisure-time needs, the Regional Transport Division plans and proposes tourism rides that often travel the secondary lines. Here, you can still discover unspoilt areas that are not easily reached by other means of transport.

In particular, for mountain sports enthusiasts, and in collaboration with the Club Alpino Italiano, excursions are arranged with the Trenotrekking formula.
Train excursions are also organized for seaside destinations, such as Treno del Mare (Sea Train) of the Veneto region and Treno Azzurro (Sky-blue) of Emilia Romagna. Treno del Mare (Sea Train) runs on the tracks between Schio and Chioggia and - in agreement with the local authorities and Tourist Boards - trips allow for free cycle rental at the arrival point and discounts on entrance prices in certain seaside resorts. Treno Azzurro instead serves the Romagna Riviera with a route that takes you from the inland city of Bologna to Cattolica on the coast; as well as evening services traditionally used by youngsters going to night-clubs, day-time services also run if you want to visit cultural or entertainment attractions

If instead you love to travel back down memory lane, why not experience the excursions organized by some Regional councils in cooperation with amateur assocations? These use steam locomotives and traditional period carriages that have been fully renovated.
