LUGANO

Lugano is the financial capital of Ticino. The particular quality of the subalpine landscape, the lake and its banks, the surrounding mountains of volcanic origin and the favourable climatic conditions of the region, all blend together to make Lugano a highly popular tourist venue. A mini cruise on the lake makes for a relaxing interlude for visiting charming new places. Or why not discover and admire the natural and cultural sites along guided routes with a mountain bike? The Museum of Modern Art takes up a study of leading modern artists from 12 November 2006 to 4 February 2007 by devoting a broad anthological review of Majorcan artist Miquel Barceló, one of the main representatives of contemporary Spanish aesthetic sense. The retrospective exhibition, which is the first homage paid by a Swiss museum to the artist, illustrates the salient moments of Barceló's output through about 70 works of particular significance, from important museums and private collections, and takes in such disciplines as painting, sculpture and drawing. The exhibition's journey illustrates the main topics that have marked the artist's studies for over 2 decades, embracing subjects as the workshops, portraits, still life, crucifixions, bullfights and underwater landscapes. The Museum is open Tuesdays to Sundays from 9.00 to 18.00 (closed on Mondays) from the 23rd to 26th and the 30th to the 31st of December 2006.
