InterRail cards are strictly personal and cannot be lent or sold to other persons. On request of the on-board personnel, it is compulsory to show one's passport or another officially-recognised identity document.

Before beginning their journey on the chosen day, holders of InterRail Global flexible or InterRail One Country must write the date in the first free box of the calendar of the flexible days printed on the ticket. However, if the first journey of the day is made on a night train leaving after 7 pm, the start-date to enter on the calendar is that of the following day.

InterRail allows unlimited travel in the class, and for number of days, stated. The use of a 1st Pass class in 2nd class does not entitle the holder to any refund. Travelling in 1st class with a 2nd class Pass requires travellers to pay a price supplement of the difference between the two classes for the relevant section.

InterRail cards entitle holders to travel free on all trains that do not require compulsory booking. On the other trains, holders must pay the "Global Pass" tariff, including seat allocation.

Separate charges are made for all additional services, such as: optional booking of places, beds, couchettes, on-board meals etc.

The Villa S. Giovanni Messina (Sicily) ferry crossing is free in the standard class.

2nd class InterRail holders are not allowed on the Leonardo Express operating between Rome and Fiumicino Airport.

InterRail cards can only be refunded in the following cases
- when an application is made before the 1st day of validity
- when the railway personnel has marked it as "not used" before the first day of validity, and the refund is requested within 1 month after the last day of validity.

Applications for refunds can be submitted only to the issuing railway company.

Refunds are subject to a deduction charge of 15%

InterRails lost or stolen cannot be refunded or replaced

InterRails partially used are not refundable.
