"Green" Train 2007
FROM ROME JOURNEY STARTS OF THE ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY CONVOY OF LEGAMBIENTE AND ITALIAN STATE RAILWAYS

In Rome the 2007 edition has been presented of the "Green" Train, an environment-aware convoy promoted by Legambiente and Italy's state railway company. From 22 February to 26 March, it will make its annual campaign of monitoring the noise and atmospheric conditions of Italy's small and large urban areas.

The initiative - this year reaching its 18th edition, has made over 80,000 analysis in over 250 towns and cities, contributing to reaching significant results, among which the approval of a framework Law on noise pollution and a decree-law on benzene.

The train's 2007 itinerary will take in visits to seven regional capitals - Florence, Bologna, Milan, Genoa, Naples, Bari and Rome – and the monitoring of the quality of air and noise levels of 35 roads, with more than 1900 hours dedicated to monitoring benzene, the main atmospheric pollutants and decibel levels.

In addition to the work of measuring and analysis, entrusted to the Experimental Institute of "Gruppo FS" - Italy's state railways group - the "Green" Train is also an interactive exhibition, divided into an itinerary of four carriages, which provides an important service of information-provision and awareness-enhancement on such issues as mobility, greenhouse effect, climate changes, renewable sources and energy saving.

The objective is to promote awareness on these subjects not only among the new generations (many schools visit the train) but also among local administrations and the general public opinion. The logic behind it is to bring attention to the planet's environmental emergency starting also from small things, from each of us acting locally within our own sphere and scope to favour the protection of nature and energy conservation.
