New timetable from 10 June. New AV connections and new "Amica" Fare
Fast connections for Milan-Naples, Milan-Venice, and Milan-Genoa. Seven new high-speed "Alta Velocità" trains on the Milan-Naples route. And 20% discounts in the medium- and long-distance services

From 10 June the new railway timetable takes effect, valid until 8 December 2007. Italy's state railways group (FS) aims to improve service quality by improving both journey times and a range of other services.

The lines involved in the main news
Milan-Venice section
From 2 July, three new pairs of ETR 500 Eurostar Italia trains will be operating between Milan and Venice, taking 2 hours 20 minutes (ten minutes less for those getting off at Mestre), with stops at Mestre and Padua. The remaining Eurostars will be transformed into Eurostar City services, with a reduction in journey times after adjusting for the stops. These improvements have been made possible by the quadrupling of the Milan-Venice line between Milan-Treviglio and Padua-Mestre.

Milan - Naples section

As from 10 June, the Eurostars currently serving the Milan-Naples line will run on the new AV Rome-Naples section and become Eurostar Italia Alta Velocità (high speed)services, with a time-saving of 18 minutes. Thus, the Milan-Naples journey takes 6 hours 12 minutes instead of 6 hours 30; from Bologna to Naples 4 hours 26 mins instead of 4 hours 44 mins, from Florence SMN to Naples, 3 hours 19 mins instead of 3 hours 37 mins.
With the introduction of the new Alta Velocità Eurostar Italia trains (high-speed) from Milan to Naples, on the Rome-Naples section the timetables of the AV trains already operating have been changed.

The prices of the new services will correspond to old Eurostar price, plus the difference currently in force for the Alta Velocità/High Capacity Rome - Naples section. In second class, tickets will cost three euro less with respect to current price.

Genoa - Milan section
On the Milan-Genoa section a new pair of Eurostar Italia trains connect the two cities in 1 hour 10 mins, 22 minutes less than the previous IC Plus trains (which remain with timetable unchanged) and with the Eurostar Italia comfort. The new trains are the ES 9314 Genoa-Milan, which leaves Genova Brignole at 7.38, Genova P.P. at 7.47 and arrives at Milano-Rogoredo at 8.57 and Milano Porta Garibaldi at 9.22; and the ES 9319 Milan-Genoa, which leaves Milano P.G. at 18.40, Milano-Rogoredo at 19.06 and arrives at Genova P.P. at 20.16 and at Genova Brignole at 20.25.

The new travel proposals

From 10 June new offers are added, with new travel opportunities: the extension of the "Amica" fare and the new ticket that allows travel on the trains with seats full.

"Amica" Fare
With the "Amica" fare, you can have 20% off all medium- and long-distance trains (AV, T-Biz, ES*, ES* City, IC Plus, IC, ICN, and Express). The tariff applies to the tickets purchased until midnight of the day before departure, for a limited number of places for each train and for a spending of at least 10 euro.

The new "Salvaviaggio" ticket
June also presents the "Salvaviaggio" (journey-saver) tickets, which, without having of pay surcharges, allow passengers to travel on "sold out" trains without guarantee of place. For each Eurostar carriage, high speed (AV), EurostarCity and IntercityPlus trains, 15 tickets will indeed be issued without guarantee of a seat. Exactly the number which, on average, remain free due to last-minute journey changes not notified to Italian railways.

In the regions, tickets printed at home

Among Italy's regions, the new timetable will aim at improving the punctuality and overall regularity of the services. The most important news in this sector is however the launch of the on-line service (since 22 May experimentally), which allows tickets and Travel Cards for travel in regions to be bought and printed directly from one's computer at home without having to stamp them before boarding. This new service is the first example in Europe of direct ticket printing for non-bookable trains and brings in 80% of the passengers carried each year by Trenitalia.
