ASSISTANCE AT THE STATIONS AND ON BOARD

At the stations you can use a network of assistance and welcoming points in the main stations (the opening timetables are on display at these points or you can find them out by calling 89 20 21). Also, to ensure that you are comfortable while at the stations and to improve your journey, the main stations provide other services, indicated by ad hoc signs.
On board, instead, assistance is guaranteed by the on-board personnel.

ASSISTANCE, REDUCTIONS AND SERVICES FOR DISABLED TRAVELLERS

Special assistance is given to travellers with special requirements, among which, firstly, the Disabled. If you are disabled, an service assistance is provided for your at the departure and arrival stations depending on the information given by telephone or directly at the desks of the assistance centres (Blue Lounges) at least 24 hours before departure (in fifteen main stations, this time is reduced to 6 hours before departure).
If you are sight-impaired or blind, a victim of war or organised crime and/or holder of mobility allowance, you can benefit from special fare reductions.
More information on the service and location of the Blue Lounges is found in the booklet "Services for the Disabled" (ask at the station ticket desks and authorised travel agencies) and in a dedicated section on this site

THE EUROSTAR CLUB CIRCUIT

If you have bought the Cartaviaggio Executive  can take advantage of a broad range of advantages from the Eurostar Club points in the main railway stations (for example, you can book tickets by telephone, calling 89 20 21, pay with credit cards, receive messages, book a taxi or hire a car).
And if you're waiting for your train, you can sit comfortably in the Eurostar Club-reserved mini-lounges.

FREEDOM TO NOT SMOKE

Smoking is forbidden in the waiting rooms of stations and the stops and, irrespective of signs displayed in the carriages, on all national trains and, within Italy, on all international trains leaving and arriving in Italy.

CATERING

On board the trains, catering services are available which can be recognised by the symbols beside the train number and specified in the Official Timetable.
When buying your ticket or also afterwards, but in any case before starting the journey, you can book the catering service service in the restaurant cars of the ES* and IC trains of the Italy-only services, and on some international trains too.
If you have a rail ticket, you can freely access the restaurant car for both meals and other food and drinks. You must however leave the car when another sitting of meals must be served.

IN THE EVENT OF STRIKES

Many services are guaranteed also in the event of strikes. To know which ones they are, you can see the railway timetables or the dedicated section on this site and linked on the main page.

SECURITY

Remember that luggage is always and only in your custody.
Indeed, Trenitalia can answer only for certain damages arising from railway accidents attributable to the company.
In cases of theft of luggage or other items, you can nevertheless apply for compensation due to a free insurance policy that covers thefts of items left in the suitable spaces, at end of the carriages of the Eurostar Italia trains, in the Eurostar Italia AV trains, in the Intercity trains with the large-lounge "Grand Comfort" carriages, in couchette carriages or Wagon Lits (for thefts occurring during journeys with compartments closed), as well as of items left in cars transported on board or secured to motorbikes.

To make an insurance claim, you must:
apply for compensation to the pertinent ticket office of the destination station or send it by surface post/mail to the following address:
TRENITALIA SpA
ASSISTENZA PASSEGGERI
Via Giolitti, 2
00185 ROMA
within 15 days from the theft date, provided notice of the theft was given immediately (and in all cases no later than 24 hours after it) to the Trenitalia service personnel and that an official report has been made to the Italian railway police "Polizia Ferroviaria" and/or another police authority (Carabinieri, Guardia di Finanza) within three working days from the theft;
fornireprovide Trenitalia with a detailed note of the items stolen or damaged, stating their related value, and attaching the original of the validated ticket. The original of the ticket can be replaced by the photostatic copy authenticated by the receiving office (ticket desk, customer assistance) and is an essential item for being able to grant the compensation. Should the ticket have been stolen along with the luggage, it is necessary that this is clearly pointed out in the theft statement.

For submissions by surface mail, the postage date stamp will be used as proof in deciding on the expiry terms indicated above.

You can ask for more information at the ticket desks and travel agencies.

You can take with you for free all luggage items that do not exceed the space at your disposal and also more bulky items, provided these do not annoy other passengers. Luggage must not contain hazardous or poisonous materials.

CAR ON BOARD

If you want to go by rail taking your car with you, you can take advantage of the "car on board" service, available on many long-distance routes. The car-on-board trains allow you to travel comfortably in the wagon lits, couchettes or the seat carriages, reaching your destination without the hassle and stress of traffic, motorway jams and all the other inconveniences that make driving tiring. You'll arrive fresh and ready to enjoy the convenience and freedom of using your own vehicle. Also, you can opt to not travel on the same train as your car but, for example, other Night Train or one of a different category. In this case, you will nevertheless have to pick up the car by delegating another person in writing. You can book the service from as long as two months before and up until seven hours before train departure. Prices vary depending on the distances and period (Standard- and Peak-Season tariffs). If you book both the outbound and return journeys at the same time, you can book the return journey three months before the departure date. From 1 June to 30 September, this service can be booked 3 months in advance for outbound journeys and four months for return ones.

Please remember that vehicles (and any towed trailers) must not exceed the following dimensions:
Max. height from ground 1.58 m.
Width 1.80 m.
Length 7 m.
Motor vehicles must be registered and have a maximum of 9 seats including driver.

The vehicle loading/unloading operations are carried out only by personnel indicated by Trenitalia, also through the personnel of supplier companies; the personnel assigned for this service also secure the vehicles to the carriage. The boarding times vary depending on the train and can be seen, for each connection, on the Trenitalia Official Timetable. The vehicle handing-over operations start after about 60 minutes from the train's arrival.

Recommendations for the sending cars by train:
Remove any non-original (manufacturer) external accessories (luggage-/ski-carriers etc.) close the windows and the hood of open top cars. Remove or fold down the external radio aerials, possibly securing them to avoid damage to them and other things en route. Disable the vehicle's anti-theft alarm. Leave a spare ignition key secured to the dashboard; it will be used by the Trenitalia personnel to lock the doors before securing the car to the carriage. Always take a copy of the door key with you.

Change

Until five days before the booked train's departure and by paying any applicable price difference and the change fee, you can request once (at any ticket office and agency enabled for booking services) for a replacement of the car on board "bollettino" (slip) and/or journey tickets issued in conjunction with another ticket, as well as the change of the number plate number and the vehicle to transport. If you buy at the same time both the outbound and return journeys, the change of the slip with ticket of another type must apply to both journey directions.
